  PIP by ICON84

  MIDI Arpeggiator - Manual

==============================================================

Hold a chord, and PIP plays its notes one after another,

in time with your DAW.

PIP sends MIDI, not audio. Put a synth after it (Serum, Vital,

or any other instrument) to hear the result.

--------------------------------------------------------------

1. INSTALLATION (Windows)

--------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close your DAW.

2. Copy the PIP.vst3 folder to:

      C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3

3. Open your DAW and rescan your plugins if needed.

4. You will find PIP by ICON84 among your instruments.

Format: VST3, 64-bit.

--------------------------------------------------------------

2. SETUP IN YOUR DAW

--------------------------------------------------------------

PIP loads as an instrument that makes no sound and sends MIDI.

This lets it work in every DAW.

REAPER, BITWIG, CUBASE, FL STUDIO

Put PIP and your synth in the same chain, with PIP first:

      PIP  ->  Serum

  Play on that track.

ABLETON LIVE

  1. Put PIP on MIDI track 1.

  2. Put your synth on MIDI track 2.

  3. On track 2, set:

        MIDI From  ->  1-MIDI  /  PIP

        Monitor    ->  In

  4. Play (or put your MIDI clip) on track 1.

--------------------------------------------------------------

3. THE CONTROLS

--------------------------------------------------------------

RATE

How fast the notes go: 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32 notes.

Always in sync with your DAW tempo. While your DAW is playing,

PIP locks to the timeline (bars and beats).

Turn the knob or click one of the four values.

DIRECTION

The order of the notes. 16 patterns. Hover over a button to

  see its name. Examples below use a C - E - G chord.

  Up C E G C E G ... low to high

  Down G E C G E C ... high to low

  Up / Down C E G E C E ... up and back down

  Down / Up G E C E G E ... down and back up

  Up / Down Incl C E G G E C ... like Up/Down, but the

                                         top and bottom notes

                                         play twice

  Converge C G E C G E ... outside notes first,

                                         moving inward

  Diverge E G C E G C ... middle note first,

                                         moving outward

  Leapfrog C G E C ... two steps up, one back

  Pinky C G E G C G ... keeps returning to the

                                         highest note

  Thumb C E C G C E ... keeps returning to the

                                         lowest note

  Skip 1 3 5 2 4 6 ... every other note, then

                                         the ones in between

  Double C C E E G G ... each note twice

As Played the order in which you pressed the keys

Random Walk moves one step up or down at random -

                  sounds like a wandering melody

Shuffle every note exactly once in a random order,

                  then a new order

Random any note, never the same note twice in a row

OCTAVES

Repeats the chord 1, 2, 3 or 4 octaves higher.

  Example with 2 octaves: C3 E3 G3 C4 E4 G4

Turn the knob or click 1, 2, 3 or 4.

GATE

How long each note sounds, from 0 to 100%.

  Left  = short and plucky.

Right = long and connected (legato).

Even at 0%, notes are at least 3 ms long so your synth can

  still hear them.

RANDOMIZE

Rolls a new combination of Rate, Direction, Octaves and Gate.

It stays musical: 1/8 and 1/16 come up most often, and gate

stays between 30% and 95%. You always get something new.

PREVIEW

Shows the notes PIP plays. The bright bar is the note that is

playing right now. The note names at the top show the pattern.

With no keys held, it shows an example on C3 - E3 - G3 so you

can hear in your head what a setting will do.

SYNC

The light turns green while your DAW is playing. PIP is then

locked to the timeline. When your DAW is stopped, PIP still

plays at your project tempo and starts right away on your

  first key.

4. MOUSE TIPS

--------------------------------------------------------------

Drag a knob up or down change the value

Scroll wheel over a knob change the value step by step

Double-click a knob back to the default

Drag the bottom-right corner make the window bigger or smaller

Defaults: Rate 1/16, Direction Up, Octaves 1, Gate 50%.

All four controls can be automated in your DAW.

--------------------------------------------------------------

5. GOOD TO KNOW

--------------------------------------------------------------

- Velocity and MIDI channel come from what you play.

- Pitch bend, mod wheel and other MIDI pass straight through to

  your synth.

- Let go of all keys and PIP stops right away.

- Let go of the key that is sounding, and that note stops right

away while the others keep going.

- No stuck notes: PIP always sends a Note Off, also when you

bypass it, stop the transport or change settings mid-note.

- PIP remembers its settings when you save your project.

--------------------------------------------------------------

6. TROUBLESHOOTING

--------------------------------------------------------------

I hear nothing

PIP itself makes no sound. Check that a synth comes after it

(Reaper etc.) or that the synth track listens to PIP and

Monitor is set to In (Ableton).

PIP does not show up in my DAW

  Check that PIP.vst3 is in C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3

  and rescan your plugins.

The synth plays my chord instead of an arpeggio

The synth is getting MIDI from your keyboard directly instead

of from PIP. In Ableton, set MIDI From on the synth track to

  the PIP track.

Notes come in late

While your DAW is playing, PIP waits for the next step on the

grid so it stays in time. A note played just after the beat

  starts right away.
